Scenes/Song mode + Less mouse/More shortcuts for a real practical/live use

Post by jaylcee » Sun Jun 23, 2019 10:08 pm

Hello,

I think Giada is a great piece of Software and potentially the best alternative to Ableton Live within the Linux world (there is Bitwig but it is expensive and the license system is a bit too pushy). Unfortunately, I think the ergonomics could be way better and the software does not permit a live utilization yet. Here are two features that I find to be more than essential:

1. Despite the channels/columns system, Giada only allows to stack clips and launch them individually. There is no possible interactions between them like in Ableton, Bitwig and even very simple Linux looper like Luppp or SuperBoucle, namely:

- Horizontal scenes that launch one clip per channel at once (and stop the rest)
- Vertical connection between the clips within a column: If sample 1 is on and sample 2 is launched, then sample 1 will stop simultaneously.

In my opinion, this is the only way to perform songs and not just jam. (Also, every clip could be set on "simple loop" by default.).

2. Giada is only really usable with the mouse which does not allow a good smooth creative live workflow . It would be great to use the common shortcuts to select a clip (arrows), copy (ctrl+C), cut (ctrl+X), paste (ctrl+V), duplicate (ctrl+D), delete (del),etc.,etc.,etc. clips. Or just quickly save/update a project with ctrl+S instead of searching and browing with the mouse.

I am sorry if my tone seems harsh, please believe me, my words are filled with love for this beautiful project :-)

Thank you.

Hi jaylcee,

I appreciate your feedback. Yes, Giada is still in an early stage of development (beta?), there is so much work to be done on the UI/UX side. That said,

> 1. Despite the channels/columns system, Giada only allows to stack clips and launch them individually [...]

This is correct. We are working on the so-called "sequencer banks", where each bank corresponds to a specific channel configuration (which sample is loaded, actions layout, ...). Switching banks would basically change which part of the song you're playing - chorus, bridge, verse and so on. It would require manual interaction, though. The Horizontal scene might be a good way to script the bank switching, among other things.

"Selectable channels" is in our TO-DO list: https://github.com/monocasual/giada/issues/221. I also agree on common shortcuts like Ctrl+s and similar.

Many thanks for your input!

Thank you very much FFT. I am very looking forward to Giada 1.0

Just one more quick thing : it would be also great to drag and drop loops within the interface, like from one channel to the other.

Have a nice day.

How would it be different from cloning a channel?

Hello,

I simply mean being able to select a sample (or a few) in Giada and move it to another channel/scene by dragging it with the mouse. Like in Ableton/Bitwig.

Cool, it looks like a good addition to the "Selectable channels" feature. Thanks for the input! :+1:
